Helgoland Delegation Visits Cuxhaven
HWG Members Cuxport and DFDS Present Cuxhaven as a RoRo Port
At the beginning of the New Year, a delegation from Helgoland, led by Mayor Jörg Singer, visited the port of Cuxhaven in an effort to gain an understanding of one of the most important Roll On/Roll Off (RoRo) cargo handling ports. Whether it is multi-ton heavy onshore or offshore wind farm sections, new vehicles or trailers holding varying goods – a diversity of cargoes are handled by Cuxhaven’s berths via rolling processes.
Hans-Peter Zint, Chairman of the Cuxhaven Port Association (HWG) and managing director of HWG member Cuxport, along with Oliver Fuhljahn, Head of Automobile Logistics at Cuxport, demonstrated to the guests the highly specialized RoRo installations at Europakai. The Cuxport terminal has three berths with up to 15,8 meters water depth where rolling cargo and pieces of up to 350 tons can be transshipped to vessels equipped either with stern- or quarter RoRo ramps. All berths are accessible straight from the Elbe river navigation fairway without the need to pass any locks.
Further, there was an opportunity to view the RoRo vessel PETUNA SEAWAYS, belonging to the short sea liner company DFDS Seaways, which was in the process of being loaded. The vessel’s captain readily answered the guests‘ questions and discussed the particulars of this specialized process.
“Cuxhaven has oriented itself toward rolling goods, high and heavy cargoes and project cargo by making corresponding infrastructure and equipment investments. The heavy-lift capable berths and platforms and the connecting heavy load-capable road mean that the entire port is suited to the warehousing and transshipment of project cargoes. We are happy to communicate this expertise and present Cuxhaven as a capable and successful port,” said Hans-Peter Zint, chairman of the Cuxhaven Port Business Association, summarizing the conclusions of the visit.
In addition to increasing RoRo traffic, Cuxhaven also has a long tradition as a fishing and supply port for the island of Helgoland.
